Baby corn with long tresses

Published in JPGmag Issue #19 under the Delectable theme.

FEATURED in Mood & Ambience and in Nirvana March 2009.

This image can be enjoyed both horizontally or vertically. Turn your head to see how the vertical version looks, ha ha!

This is part of my baby corn series, inspired by one marketing trip when I bought some whole baby corn and was surprised to find such long “hair” – officially called cornsilk.

It was my first – and one of my very few – attempts at so called “real” still life photography, where I purposely set up the image and adjust the lighting. (Most of my other “still life” are captured as is, and I call them “candid still life”.)

The set up was simple. I used a black t-shirt for the background of this image and, in another, a brown envelope.

As I do not own any studio lighting, I used the natural sunlight coming in from the window. This was in the 1990s when I lived in a corner apartment that faced North-east and had the morning sun coming in from a side window. Unfortunately, I no longer enjoy this luxury. My current apartment faces South and it is sandwiched between two others, so there are no side windows anyway :-(

The result may not be as brilliant as “regular” still life done with professional studio lighting. But I prefer the sunlight.

And although these images were done about 15 years ago, some of my friends still remember them. In particular, one who is generally not generous with his compliments just commented the other day that he thinks this series is good.

I think so too ;-)

That’s really beautiful, very creative. There is so much beauty in the most ordinary items, if we just SEE when we look.

Thanks Jenxie. I was thinking if I should experiment more with still life, eg buy a small lighting set up. But my mindset is to “go out” to take photos, rather than stay home to do so, lol! Must change that mindset.
