How Young to Understand Death
This photo was taken at the funeral of the first police officer killed while on duty in my city, Windsor, Ontario, in over 125 years. It was also the largest funeral in at least fifty years, if not longer. The officer’s children’s classes came, and as high school students we were paired up with them to watch them for the day. This was my student… I think he was ten at the time…

The death of one of those whose job it is to protect us affects us all. They stand against all the insults unable to answer. Occasioanlly they get the chance to show support for each other and unfort a funeral is one of those occasions

Thanks again everyone! =) I’m totally thrilled at the moment that this actually made it, you have no idea. It’s odd, because even though this is one of my earliest photos, I still find it to be one of my favourites. That day is actually what got me into photography, the pictures that came from it… but thanks again for all of your kind words! I found the site from the finding contest, actually, but all of you made me stay for more =)

Hi!
Great shot! It has an intense feeling and portrays exactly the emotion of what it is to mourn.
Before I read the details on the photo I could see why it was that this boy’s face showed so much hurt and anger.
Nice job, you’re very talented.
Chris Richards in reply to redsirens’s comment, 5 months ago
Thanks so much RS =) it was defnitely one of the best photos I took that day, maybe ever. The emotion I managed to get in this actually made me decide to get into photography on a slightly more professional level, seeing as though I was just a 15 year old with his parents 4MP camera at the time =)

The gravity of the moment is palpable. Officer funerals are so emotionally challenging to attend. Wonderful capture.
Chris Richards, 5 months ago
Thanks Mark =) It definitely wasnt the best experience, emotionally speaking, and I wasn’t sure if the camera and picture taking was appropriate at first, but I’m very glad I decided to now… It’s a small moment in history for this city, and for me… It marks many things for a lot of people, I guess… but, I’m rambling. Thank you for the kind words, again =)
