The Atlas Of Dreams - Color Plate 107 by

Looming out of the chaos, what appears to be a menacing array of teeth and jaws confronts you. While seemingly of plant origin, this little shop of horrors is best avoided if you want to keep all your extremities.

“Color Plate 107” combines a photograph from stock.xchng member acmusic with a “spin art painting” created by my father, Gus Maier.

“The Atlas Of Dreams” is an ongoing project started in 1999. Each plate is composed of several different images combined to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Source images include historic engravings, NASA photos of space and the Earth’s surface, abstract images, the artwork of my father: Gus Maier, and of course my own artwork – recycled and reused. Watch out for stray butterflies, fish, snakes, and other animals…

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.
