Solar Ghosts 3 by Richard Maier

Available to buy on…

Over the years, I’ve been very pleased with the way the “Winter Worlds” series from December 2007 came out. As I pondered what images to create for the latest Summer series, it occurred to me to try something similar with a heat theme. Rather than play with desert landscapes, I went straight to the source and found some stark photos of flames dancing against the dark of night by stock.xchng photographer Gavin Mills. I made some adjustments to the photos in Photoshop and then proceeded to start wrapping them around themselves. In some of the resulting images, the black circle at the center reminded me of NASA photos of solar flares where the sun is blacked out so as not to overwhelm the delicate light of the flares. These loops and whorls looked too alive to be just flares though. The flames seem to take on life and character, so I’ve christened them ghosts.

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.
