These sailors are coming home to a port that is strangely more lush and tropical than they remember.

“Color Plate 97” combines a 19th century engraving from a Dover collection with two “spin art paintings” created by my father, Gus Maier.

“The Atlas Of Dreams” is an ongoing project started in 1999. Each plate is composed of several different images combined to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Source images include historic engravings, NASA photos of space and the Earth’s surface, abstract images, the artwork of my father: Gus Maier, and of course my own artwork – recycled and reused. Watch out for stray butterflies, fish, snakes, and other animals…

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.

Like a verdant dream – this image unfolds a story the longer you look at it :)

  • Thanks Gwyn! I do like to have lots of details in my images for the imagination to play with.
