For this series, I wanted to create images that had an antique or deteriorated look. Nosing around with Filter Forge, I found several filters by the same developer that offered various ways to create old style maps. This was a great starting point, but the images were still too clean looking for what I had in mind. Blending in textures of rusting surfaces helped enormously. Various adjustment layers and tweaks to the blending modes in Photoshop finished everything off.

“Mythic Map 2” incorporates images from stock.xchng photographers Mira Pavlakovic (“sumeja”) and Alexander Kokinidis (“hirohito”) and a Filter Forge filter by “Crapadilla”.

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.
