Clockwork Universe 2 by Richard Maier

When I set out to work on the “Clockwork Universe” series, I had a steampunk aesthetic in mind. Once I started working however, the series veered off in its own direction. While they’re not nearly as brassy as I originally had in mind, these images displayed a beauty that I couldn’t resist.

“Clockwork Universe 2” incorporates an image from Wikimedia Commons photographer Samuel Wantman, an image created in ArtMatic, and an image of NGC 3603 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.

gorgeous colour pallette in this one. this would be fantastic as the cover image for an edition of “The Time Machine,” or similar…

  • Thanks Tania, that’s about the look I was going for.

I like your coloured steampunk look… I know what you mean by it ‘veered off in it’s own direction’… always happens with mine too. Frustrating, but wonderful at the same time. Personally, I think the colour makes a change from brassy steampunk, and it took a great direction without your permission :))

  • Thank you so much Alison! I try not to be too controlling in my art, mostly because I love those unexpected surprises you get along the way, which make all the difficulties worthwhile. :) I knew I was going to infuse more color than is usual for steampunk into this series, but I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t figure out a way to get that brassy, metallic gleam as well… :/
