“Color Plate 39” shows a darker vision of the swamp. Environmental disaster with a side of raining Fortean frogs. It combines a photograph from stock.xchng member Alla Leitus with a “melted wax painting” created by my father, Gus Maier. The frogs are taken from The Complete Encyclopedia Of Illustration compiled by J.G. Heck.

“The Atlas Of Dreams” is an ongoing project started in 1999. Each plate is composed of several different images combined to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Source images include historic engravings, NASA photos of space and the Earth’s surface, abstract images, the artwork of my father: Gus Maier, and of course my own artwork – recycled and reused. Watch out for stray butterflies, fish, snakes, and other animals…

While having a strong background in photography and traditional printmaking, Richard Maier has mostly worked as a digital artist since the mid-90’s. His abstract and non-representational work tends toward a lush color palette and stark design, often filtered through the lens of chaos and noise. The natural world, as both the microcosm of biology and the macrocosm of space, is his favorite subject matter. He strives to create art that is both visually pleasing and intellectually fascinating.

Thank you both! I think my subconscious played a trick on me when I was working on this because when the first proof print was done, I looked at it and thought “Katrina”, which was a surprise to me and not what I had been thinking of when I was busy with making the image work. At the moment, I can’t remember if I added the frogs before or after this insight…

The detail is intriguing and almost overwhelming; it’s hard to look away! Nice work!

  • Thank you! The images are designed to keep the viewer’s interest at full size (24″×24″), so it sometimes gets a bit… compacted in these web views.
