Derwent Island and Cat Bells
Taken at sunrise on a very icy morning, it was a full time job just trying to keep my filter clear. The hill is Cat Bell’s probably the most popular hiking hill in the lake district you can usually see the procession of people walking to the summit on most days, but not today at fist light!!!!.
The Island is Derwent island and has a long history, in Elizabethan times(1500) it was occupied by the German miners who lived there for there own safety I think the local land owners were none to happy about the Queen and these mining companies taking all there precious minerals.
In 1770 Joseph Pocklington purchased Derwent Island for £300, known as King Pocky he built the boat house you can see in the shape of a nonconformist chapel with bell tower, there is also a large house in the centre of the island but it obscured from view by the trees. He got his nick name for organising mock battles on the lake.

That light across the snow capped peaks is perfect Rich. This has a really early morning winterey feel captured so well. The cool tones make me glad i’m warm and indoors as you can feel how cold it must have been. The reflections are sublime and I like the smallest of mists rising up off the water.
Rich Gale replied
Thanks Stuart.
Michael Oubridge
Beautiful Rich, how is your weather this morning?
Rich Gale replied
Michael, well its wet and raining at the momment no snow for us :-(.
Michael Oubridge
LOL It is bleaching down here in Blyth, it was heavy rain at 6am, that washed all the salt off the roads now it is settling beautifully.
joak
fantastic shot rich and magic story love it
Rich Gale replied
Thanks Joak, our other Island Lords also had a manor house on it but was burned down by those terrible English :-) in the 1700, as James Radcliffe was the Earl of Derwentwater and a Jacobite, he was excuted in 1716.

This beauty could well be a classical painting Rich. Your dedication in being in the right place at the right time (and with the right skills) shows in your rewarding photographs.
Rich Gale replied
Well its was my 4 attempt at this image, but really very little effort as its only a few mins from my house and with sunrise at about 8:15 it dose n ot take much dedication to get there!!!!!.

Private is good…now if we could just buy it off him! Or conquer it….we are Warriors after all! LOL! :)

Conquer sounds good it owned by the national trust so there not allowed to sell it, you could rent it but its not cheap!!!!!.
So I suppose to conquer is the warrior way :-).
