Squirrel on a Grey trap
Found this guy yesterday in a place where I used to see a lot of squirrels but I’ve not seen any for nearly a year, I thought they had all been wiped out by squirrel pox. He is standing on a Grey squirrel trap(they carry the pox) the idea is the heavy grey stands on the platform in the trap and the door springs closed. As the red are much smaller they can come feed here with out triggering the trap.
canon 400D,sigma 70-300 APO and monpod. shot at 300mm from about 8 meters, iso 400 1/60 sec, 5.6 app

good one rich they dont often stay still long enough to get good pics.

Joak, when there moving its impossible to get sharp pics, you just have to wait till there eating or resting.
I’ve got loads of action shots of them but they are never sharp :-( I think you need a good fast lens to stand any chance of capturing them in flight!!!!.

The squirrels at my house look very different. I love this little fellow’s tufted ears, foxy red coat, and white underside. You’ve done a good job at capturing his perky personality.
Rich Gale in reply to Carol & Kev Haberle’s comment, 3 months ago
Carol, no these guys are no pest they under threat and probalby will be wiped out in the uk by the american grey which is the real pest the cage is designed to catch the grey’s so they can be dealt with.

I’m not clear on who brings the pox?
Cute little guy, I hope they make it.
Of course we in the U.S. imported English Sparrows which displace many native species too… this is the trouble with people doing intercontinental travel and trade.

john the grey’s carry the pox but it dose not harm them.
