Between Heaven and Earth by

“Isn’t it true that you start your life a sweet child believing in everthing under your father’s roof? Then comes the day of the Laodiceans, when you know you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, and with the visage of a gruesome grieving ghost you go shuddering through nightmare life.”

  • You need not open a door to be outside,
    to find yourself on the edge of darkness –
    between night and day,
    land and sky,
    heaven and earth.
    This is no place for you,
    you have no business here,
    with these other people,
    these invisible ones;
    ‘I do not belong here,’ you tell them, over and over.
    The first time it happened was a mistake, an accident;
    you hadn’t worked for months,
    the money ran out, and
    the light died in front of your eyes while reading in your chair;
    then you finally understood the meaning of “dying light”.
    There’s nothing you can do, no way to bring back the light;
    they’ll come for you tomorrow,
    and this room around you will vanish,
    your senses will expand to fill the void, overreach and
    collapse back into your worst fears.
    You will be reduced, diminished, minimized,
    but this is not the first time,
    so you know the score,
    you remember how to seek out those places where you can be invisible –
    just one more naked man, hovering between heaven and earth.

    Brilliant work,Rhoufi! Image is amazing! Powerful! Love the dark space ,pose and the awesome colours. Touching poem,well written. Outstanding!

  • Thank you Pat – you’re a night owl like me. Captured this down at ACCA waiting for a play to start. It seemed to be crying out for some words. Thank you so much.

    Rhoufi, this is gut-wrenching, both the image and your words.
    There’s power here, and devastation.
    I don’t know what else to say; it’s making me FEEL and taking away my thoughts.

    Wil be back to look again in a while.

  • Robin!!!!!! Thank you! What an enthusiastic comment. I don’t usually write poetry (this is more a prose poem really) but it came to me the instant I posted the photo last night and just went for it. He wasn’t actually upset at all, I just waited until he made a gesture that suited the ambiance and the under exposure did the rest. Thank you.

    Oh God, how moving.
    Very powerful words and image Rhoufi.

  • Thank you Georgie. The image was a bonus really and the forecourt at ACCA often has very moody lighting. It’s a bit blurry due to the long exposure time and no tripod, but the mood persists. Thank you :-)

    the image alone is riveting…very powerful. your writing sends it into a toally different dimension. pure and simple, art at it’s finest

  • Wow thank you Michael. It all came together for me with this, must have been in just the right mood. Your words are really pleasing, because I nearly didn’t post the words. Thank you.

    Perfection in all ways

    you ever best work to me……..
    even more than that……

  • Oh Madame Magali, you make me blush. For you to use the word “perfection” really makes me feel good. “you ever best work to me……..” is just about the best compliment I could get, and especially from you because of your wonderful work with shadow and light. Merci, you have made my day :-)))

    Love a lot this “twilight” image, this feeling to be in between is deep and moving..
    C’est superbe !

  • Merci Dominique, the image truly inspired the prose poem: the massive weight of the darkness above and the slanting light creeping from out of frame and the crushed posture of the man invested a darkness to the ambiance I could not ignore.

    Exquisite work … as always.
    We do tend to find the darkest port in a storm : moving write, R.

  • Thank you Margot, I am trying to balance the dark with the light at the moment, but when I saw this guy. with that posture and that amazing backdrop and slanting light, I only saw dark.
