A shopfront in Melbourne uses a 3D lure to draw you to their window.
Through multiple, illuminated peepholes in the black window,
you spy a partial sentence,
a word or two of subliminal enticement.
You approach, drawn by curiosity and wonder.
Oh so clever, you think!
The sentence widens, the trap closes,
the meaning reveals itself;
a striptease of words.
And finally you are there, nose to the glass,
peering in through the gratifying portal,
down on some object you never needed, don’t want, will never need…
… but now feel compelled to buy;
something cheaper here than anywhere else in town.
You turn away, feeling manipulated, violated;
an attempt has been made on your life;
your needs have been exchanged for wants;
your self-sufficiency traded for desires.
You have been modified without your knowing.
