The grand, old Melbourne General Post Office has been abandoned to fashionable shops, cafes and al fesco mingling. Some people (like me) still trudge the stairs looking for a book of stamps to post a letter drafted in ink on paper.

Oscar Wilde – “The Picture of Dorian Gray”
Great shot, love the light and shadows.
Thanks Kate, at 3:45pm, the sun slants in through the columns and creates a long (much longer than you see here) colonnade of banded light. Pick the time of day and it’s a feast.
Perfectly composed my friend
Thank you Angela, yes she was tall and slender like the columns, had that touch of style, and walked in just right place. I could have stayed there all day but I was in a rush. Took 6 photos in about 1 minute and was gone.
You catch people’s thoughts, don’t You….I love sending “real letters myself”….beautiful place, but I understand…… same in Paris….. would city be loosing their soul?
Oui, l’âme de la ville est vendue pour commece. Quelqu’un m’a dit que Musee Jue de Paume ne tient pas les peintres impressionnist maintenant! Il a cassé mon coeur pour l’entendre.
and sorry, I’m very bad at making clever comments about composition and light and all that ;-) but I guess it’s all perfect ;-)
Je veux seulement le commentaire du coeur, Magali. Ne vous inquiétez pas au sujet des choses techniques. Que vous voyez est tout ce qui est important.
Brisbane’s post office has a coffee shop now….but you can still buy stamps…love those shadows.
Thank you Mel. So Bribane has not gone over to the Dark Side (YET). Loved your Waterworks Exhibition, really great idea.
Oh, Musée de l’Orangerie has impressionists painters, they made a special room for TH NYmphea, Jeu de Paume is now a museum dedicated to photography…. their exhibitions are always brilliant!!!!!!!…http://www.jeudepaume.org/index.php?langue=english&PHPSESSID=f67e399ce40fe5c60856fc2019d6f923 (hope it works), so.. don’t break you heart, just open it on a new window!!!!!
Jeter ouverte toutes les fenêtres! Photographie, vraiment. Mon coeur est réparé; c’est nouveau de nouveau :—-))) les Meilleures nouvelles, je ne peux pas croire la coïncidence. Merci Magali
A sad sign of the times. People don’t take the time for meaningful communication. Lovely bw work. :-)
I have hand written (blue ink and fountain pen even) letters recently and it is very satisfying. It is slow communication that is so good. Thank you Cathy.
Buying stamps here is an adventure, no matter if there’s one or fifty people in line in front of one. Time seems to stand still and life is executed in slo-mo. The counter clerk is always disapearing out of sight for long stretches. The wait is always worthwhile when one finally gets to the pen and ink and off the computer. This person doesn’t look particularly rushed and may be an accomplished letter writer LOL.This place looks majestic.
Hi BC, thanks for your visit, I’ve just been checking out your writing. Isn’t letter writing the best, if only we had more time. I can see you like a bit of description, thank you for adding it to my page, I really appreciate lengthy discussion and thoughts being left by visitors.
The Melbourne GPO is very majestic – built during out Gold Rush era. Have a look at these for views in the colonnade by Ell-on-Wheels:
Aren’t those columns just something else??? :o)Adore the shadows they cast on a bright sunny day, just as in your image! Hehee, love the title!! :DReckon I could fill a memory card with images from here, this place is so photogenic! Just love it!! :D
Oooh! Thank you so much for linking to a couple of my GPO images! … blush!
ps. enjoyed your ‘conversation’ with BC, Rhoufi :o) … would also handwrite more if my right hand would allow it still … had very good scriptive hand-writing (flair) once upon a time, not anymore though :(
Yes it is great, but I only really dashed up the stairs when passing because you had revealed it to us all on RB. So thank you for sharing, Oh Wheeled One. ;—)))
Love the columns & shadows, Rhoufi!
Thanks Laurie, our old General Post Office has become a bit of street photographer’ mecca these days – just wish it sold stamps ;-))
