Alone In The City #17: Separate Tables

There are many places in the Kasbah-like alleys around Melbourne where you can find a tiny corner to have a quiet meal by yourself and indulge in the forgotten pleasure of solitude. Reflection and contemplation are our best solace against the velocity of the city and the distraction of its noise.

I like this! Not only the great visual stories possible (with that little “Reserved” sign, too)—the thirds and graceful framing of the ferns (ferns?) and beautiful exposure.

  • Thanks Jan, yes that “Reserved” sign is a lovely touch, and the ferns are in pots. I agonized for some time about colour vs B+W, but in the end I thought that the colour distracted from the “form” or composition of the shot. If you could have seen the speed at which I took this, you might wonder at your phrase “graceful” framing.

And that second sentence lacked a verb or an adjective. How about good, Rhoufi!

  • Jan, you are gorgeous, you bring new meaning to the word “Watchlist” ;;;—-)))

How I laughed at your comment, because you are quite right – the sentence got lost and so did I. I have made adjustments which I hope are better. Sometime this weekend I will find a particular photograph just for you. When I post it you’ll laugh so loud the Alaskan ice shelf will shear off and fall into the sea. I really appreciate your eagle eye.

Is that a mobile in her hand? She looks so wistful, like she’s expecting a message or a call, or looking for someone’s number and thinking if she should (or shouldn’t) message or call that person … the soft light on her shoulder and clavical is beautiful, and the positioning of her face on her hand just makes this for me! Beautiful work my friend, yet another fave for me :-))

  • She’s just reading a message from this guy . And personally, I think they are going to have great reunion. Don’t look too close (not best viewed large ;-) – the 1/13 sec shutter speed and my hasty framing caused a bit of blur. Thanks heaps Ell, I’m glad I finally posted it.

I like this image very much – and agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments you express in your description. Beautiful work!

  • I must own up to enjoying having a meal alone in the city, in some out of the way corner with a book or my writing notebook. I recognize and empathize with people I see who are obviously doing the same. Thank you Evelyn, for your comment and sentiments

  • Thank you so much Isa. Do you detect that “loving eye” in this image – I do so love that phrase of yours; it inspires me frequently.

“indulge in the forgotten pleasure of solitude.”

    love it.

  • Thank you Dan. Ah, you too, so good to know there are many with whom that concept strikes accord.

I’m not bothered by the so-called ‘blur’ my friend, in fact I think it adds something else to the image – time slowing down, for just a moment, or an attempt to slow time down? … just a couple of random thoughts … :-)

And yes, she is indeed reading/responding to a message from her SO … perhaps they’ve had a tiff, or both are challenged by distance and miss each other terribly … endless potential stories here :-)

  • I just love it when people write what they imagine might be happening. I see “peace” in this shot – two people enjoying their own separate bubbles in a quiet corner and each engrossed in their thoughts. Trying to clean up the blur as best I could meant I studied the image closely and so I saw peace. But for “story” I like your idea :—))

another great image with story form you Roufi you never disappoint such thoughtful photography :))

  • Thank you so much Christine. I am very chuffed that you should think of it as “thoughtful” photography, because that is what composing is for me a meditative experience and I do look for the content – it is the holy grail for me. Thank you.
