The members of the collecting team picked their way along the canyon floor, through the chill of the deep shadows where light never falls. All the way, their eyes were drawn to the patterns above them. At the end they could see a wall of white stone that must have been carefully carved out into cubic alcoves by some extinct civilization to provide shelter for their multitudes. The purity of the marble reflected the harsh light of the sun onto the sheer, inner walls of the escarpment to either side, projecting striated patterns of light and dark which partially illuminated the gloom.
Man’s monuments to himself will someday be nothing more than artifacts.
