The march of the machines
War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells
No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.

Bolte Bridge – traffic snarl. The march of the machines as they lay waste to our world. A grey day, on a grey bridge, in a grey frame of mind.

gorgeous lines! :-) val
Boy that was quick! I finished typing the tags and viewed it and there was your comment. Thank you, you cannot imagine how surprised I was that this came out – I was driving and didn’t even aim it. It looks like I took ages to set it up.

oh. this is a huge wow. brillaint eye capture.. and incredible relaxing lines and tones… feels so chique…
Hi again, you know I have been wanting to try this shot for ages, but was never a passenger. So this time I just grabbed the camera off the seat, pointed in the general direction and look what I got. There is another one of those towers just out of frame on the left. It’s a long bridge connection Melbourne’s north and south of the Yarra River. Nice to hear from again Isa.

So artistic. Love this one. :-D
So minimal isn’t it: minimal everything; objects, colour, shades. Thanks Linda.

Love love love this one, Rhoufi!!! (I’m a fan of the Bolte Bridge, but not its peak traffic!) This shot really has something…..it’s quite perfect…..your comp is spot on! V.
Thanks V. I would dearly love to stop the car up there and do it properly – that’s why I tried this desperate shot (so dangerous, really), and I actually got something like what I wanted. Absolute luck – the camera did all the work, I just hoped. Don’t suppose you are allowed to walk over the bridge?

I’m not sure….but I’m sort of guessing ‘no’ – it’s such a vehicle-dominated place up there. If you got out of your car someone would yell, ’he’s gonna jump!’ and call the cops! Well….we HOPE someone would call the cops! I’m amazed at how well your shot turned out, now that you’ve said how you got it! It certainly looks gooood :^))) V.
Yes, you got the movie feel perfectly!
Others take risks falling off high peaks to get their shots…maybe one needs to have a high sense of adventure. Yes, also worth it!
Thanks Ph, it is about risks isn’t it. I’m getting better at that – the rewards can be elating. I appreciate the observation, thank you.
