This is the last one, I promise ;-)
A little bit of nostalgia never hurt anyone, and it’s still a good song. The video comes from a 1979 performance. She was 24 years old.

She didn’t sing Chuck E’s in Love on the night, but what the heck:

How come he don’t come and p.i.p. with me
Down at the meter no more?
How come he turn off the TV
And he hang that sign on the door?
We call and we call
‘How come?’ we say
What could make a boy behave this way?
He learn all of the lines,
and every time, he don’t stutter when he talk
And it’s true! It’s true!
He sure is aquired a cool and inspired sorta jazz when he walk
Where’s his jacket and his old blue jeans?
If this ain’t healthy is it some kinda clean?

I think Chuck E’s in love
Chuck E’s in love

I don’t believe what you’re saying to me
This is something I gotta see
Is he here?
Look in the poolhall
Is he here?
Look in the drugstore
Is he here?
No, he don’t come here no more

I’ll tell you what, I saw him
He was sittin’ behind us down at the Pantages
And whatever is that he’s got up his sleeve
I hope it isn’t contagious
What’s her name?
Is that her there?
Christ, I think he’s even combed his hair!
Is that her?
What’s her name?
Oh, it’s never going to be same.
But that’s not her!
I know what’s wrong!
Chuck E’s in love with the little girl who’s singing this song
Chuck E’s in love with
Chuck E’s in love with me

mate keep ’im coming! Lucky you for having seen all these great shows !! Great shot!!!!

  • Thanks James, I suppose I feel a bit self indulgent posting favourite YouTube videos to RB, but when I found that even in low light I could actually take a “band” shot that looked reasonably good despite the distance (and the grain) then I realized that I could present an artist at both ends of her career. I was fascinated by the comparison of the two videos 30 years apart – this one showing a young, confident, playful, artist with an acrobatic voice and the next one an older woman whose face shows a real history, and the songs fit the transition. Side by side, they make interesting viewing. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, much appreciated. I have more Threepenny Opera shots I need to work-up, maybe on the weekend.

    A wondeful shot!!

  • Thank you Gena, as you can see the intense light on her blond hair confounded the exposure so I tried darkening it to the point of loosing the drummer. From a distance she still looks so young, but nowhere near as young as in the video. I couldn’t resist posting it, I have followed her career for 30 years – a photo tribute seemed the best thing for me to do.

Love the simplicity and elegance of the Ricky Lee shot Rhoufi!

  • I don’t know why but, your Avatar name rings a bell, Antangible ;-) Thanks for calling in to see what I’m up to, I really appreciate it. I agree, simple is good, especially if the subject means a lot to the photographer. á bientôt, Rhoufi

Ohh, so nostalgic now…..haven’t heard Chuck E’s in Love for a very long time! Great that you’ve done this Rhoufi…..what a perfect pleasure to hear Rickie in ’79 and see your great shot from 3rd June. Thanks!! V.

  • Hi Victoria, been out raving again? :-)) Thank you, I had never seen the 1979 video before and I could not believe how young and playful she seems. When you see her singing those lyrics you understand how difficult the music really is. She was like Joni Mitchell – able to do crazy contortions with her voice to fit the difficult timing and meter of the lyrics. It has been a real nostalgia trip for me – glad you shared it.

Wowee!!! Boy oh boy…this is SUPER. The absolutely beautiful star surrounded by light; the lyrics and the video. Really good.
So glad you put them all up. Loved seeing her in that red hat and coat, just taking her sassy stroll off screen…yep, loved it.
    Peace, brother man, peace,
