What lies beneath

The pier thrusts two hundred metres out to sea from the bluestone seawall. At its end, the boardwalk widens to surround a kiosk. The pier forms one side of the baths, and the remaining perimeter is completed by a shark net, stretching between the end of the pier and the jumbled pile of bluestone that forms the breakwater. This makeshift enclosure would be safe for swimmers, except for the gaping holes in the shark mesh that spans the jetty piles. Wild-eyed children, wearing goggles and snorkels, swim through these breaches to tug on the languid fishing lines cast over the railings by old men nodding in their canvas chairs above.

Bleached fishing nets hang under the pergola surrounding the kiosk, enticing idlers to sit at rickety wooden tables and suck on colourful icy-poles. For the children, these nets seem poised to drop at any moment, trapping unwary wanderers. They imagine the captives being smuggled to a hidden slave galley and into a world of piracy and intrigue. The free-spirited children spend hours loitering under the nets waiting for their adventure to begin.

What delightful imagery you create with the combination of the picture and the narrative!

  • Thank you Gwynne. For me, images and stories always go hand in hand. The bright rectangular portal at the end looks like the secret entrance to a mysterious world, and so I thought it would go with the words. Glad you like it. And thank you for noticing my work and watchlisting me – I’ll be dropping in to your gallery soon for a snoop. Cheers

    lovely shot, well capture

  • Thanks Antanas, I’m not completely sure why I made it B&W. I hope it works, I think it goes better with the story in B&W.

great shot and love the story……..hope there are more like this to come

  • I hope so to. I want to create similar stories for as many images as I can. It takes a while for them to come sometimes, but when they do make the image a new thing.

Truly exhilarating image! It beats, like music. Wow!
    And the text is fascinating.

  • Thank you Robin. You are a writer, can I ask – do you think the narrative would be better in the present tense; more immediate?

    – Rhoufi

  • I’ve done it anyway, and I think it is better.

It would not have worked as well if it was not b&w. Very mysterious down the other end. Love it and your work. B&W’s are my favourite.

  • Yeah, I agree. But it is still a mystery to me why some things are better in B&W. It is still the most powerful form of the photo – but not always. Looking forward to your postings.

Oh, my gosh I apologize!! You asked me a question and I just found it!!
Yes, I think present tense is super for this! Your narrative is so immediate, compelling and full of life…makes it come alive for us.

Please forgive me for being so late to reply!!

  • No need to apologize – we are all so busy and I have found some comments on my work that I forgot to reply to. I appreciate you taking the time to read it and your advice.

  • Thanks again Scott, it didn’t come alive for me until I made it B&W. Weird that :-)
