Tracks by Rhoufi

View towards Flinders Street Station, Melbourne, taken from the footbridge from the MCG Arena to the southern carpark. You can peer down over the rails, poles, wires, sleepers and grey ballast for hours.

From above it looks like a toy train set. Every now an again a train snakes into your field of view, lurching from side to side as it is wrenched here and there by the blinded points. Somebody must know which way it’s about to go, but you don’t.

Voted into the top 10 of the Lots of Lanes/Rail Tracks May ’10 challenge of the Which Way Group

Thanks, it took a long time to compose, but the location helped heaps. You can look down on all these tracks from the footbridge between the southern carpark and the MCG. The view is towards Flinders Street Station. It’s a mesh of steel rails, wires, sleepers and gravel – a geometrical maze, with the occasional train snaking through wrenched this way and that by the points.

I’m drawn into this by the patterns of the tracks .It all looks so confusing to the eye,but hopefully not for the train drivers :)..Great shot!

  • Thanks James (sorry for not replying to this earlier). I took this with a cheap point and shoot, I’d like to go back and do it again with the dSLR.

Oh, gosh, I missed this and so many others.
I’m intrigued by train tracks in general. And this is FABULOUS! Look at them! they’re everywhere! there’s got to be reason to it or there’d be wrecked trains all over the place. But it looks random .You know what? It reminds me of a tangle of yarn. There’s one end and there’s the other end. No more than two ends. but the totality of the tangle makes it seem like there are endless ends! This picture is sizzling with that kind of feeling. LOVE it!

  • Lovely comment Robin. I shot this with an old P+S camera and have been intending to return to do it again with my dSLR. I love it for the same reason – it’s chaotic, random, complex and rediculous. But it works. I love watching the trains going in one direction and then without warning, it’s wrenched to the side to take another route. And there’s the"tangle" of the overhead wires on top – as you say, it’s wonder there are not more wrecks.
