Australia’s indigenous people managed the land, the flora and the fauna like modern day shepherds, but without fences, which was a concept imposed by European colonialists who divided up the land, and assigned ownership to themselves.

The ghosts of the ancestors, many themselves fenced in… how can you make through a glass darkly with such perfect clarity, Bernard… makes all my senses go pitty-pat!

  • Dear Margot, so good to have you comment after me being absent for so long. I got very excited about this image when I realized what it might look like. The camera is outside looking through a window; the tree at the top left is outside, not far from the camera; the statues are on the window sill inside the room; the window frame mullions you can see is on the other side of the room, so you can see the bush on the other side of the house; and the trees at the top of the image are behind the camera, reflected in the window in front of the camera – shallow depth of field and the focus is on the statues. A cascade of planes and reflections. It took ages to compose because the parallax was a nightmare. Thank you for your comment and look after your heart :-)

Very effective reflection and reflective prose. I cringe to think of our treatment of natives.
    Well done, you!

  • Thank you Jan, relectionism on all fronts ;-) The shame is mutual… and the outrage still goes on.

The message of land dispossession, and fencing in a culture is very clear. Very well shot, great composition, making this a fine conceptual work

  • Thanks Ben, that was the idea for sure, but I forgot to put it into Zeitgiest… I have now though.
