Artist's Description

I took this photo at the Sanja matsuri in the Asakusa area of Tokyo. It is an area known for its connection to the Yakuza gangs (organised crime). Tattoos in Japan are generally associated with criminals and therefore covered up, but at this festival the Yakuza are out in force and enjoy the opportunity to show off their incredible tattoos which are beautiful works of art. just don’t look too closly and piss them off!
I got my (Japanese) friend to take a photo of me with these two guys and i’ve never seen anyone be so polite in my life. The Japanese are always polite by Western standards but she was downright submissive and looked at me rather incredulously when i suggested the idea.
