Artist's Description

2013 Mixed Media acrylic, conte on board 10 ply 24×18″

Todays Lesson… Heres a fun project, a little more complicated.. . start by doing a light quick sketch of the subject, in what ever media you favor… and vehicle
I prefer red or brown conte, sometimes use charcoal (hard) working from a photo or live model… I prefer live model… as I usually photograph…(or work from my file of hundreds of models I have photographed over the years…I used to earn a living as a professional photographer, along with been an artist/illustrator I worked all the time when I wasn’t shooting (photo commissions) I was painting client commissions

Lay down some quick fast acrylic, adding bits of paper here and there for effect…lay down a color add piece of paper and continue with the same color … Using heavy overlays (note this is heavy overlaying drying between colors) remember last time the (washes were light…and I used conte as a finish) and drying in between… I start by laying down dark colors first dark green, blues, then overlaying yellows and oranges…. as some of the darks will come thru… Then add gold metallic acrylic paint, also a touch here and there… also mother of pearl metallic acrylic paint… I used to spray paint , with air brush, or spray cans… (thats a waste of time)… but I found that acrylic metallics are better… as you can see the brush strokes come through here and there… and can better control the layers … allowing some of the under painting to come through… and its quick no setting up air brush or looking for cans as I have dozens of them, and no having to clean the air brush…

As I said the project is a little more complicated
then mix a pink two different shades and sparingly wash heavy but the pinks are thin I have added olive oil, (virgin), you can also add linseed oil…(but remember) if you add these oils… and you are working on paper or 10 ply board… you must either pretreat and seal or seal with the acrylics as the oils will stain the paper or board… unless you are looking for that effect you must seal areas where oils will lay… over some of the yellows and oranges… (not completely) over them… leave some yellow and orange coming through and then add some splashes of off white that you mix… over some of the yellows and orange colors… are you with me? Or did I lose you…lol… I know I work very fast…(I learned my craft as an artist/ illustrator and was always working with deadlines)… how I learned to hate that word…DEADLINE

Back to lesson… lol
its the fun and passion of painting… add some reds different shades some splashes of pinks, whites, washes, (light) of raw seinna, finish off with black, and some light detail on the eyes ,( greens, white, light blues) then as your painting is starting to come together… you know the moment… when you are done

Completely dry or let sit overnight… then with 100 grit sand paper (by hand)… I sand the entire painting… more where I want that fuzzy look… note like under the eyes and chin, etc… Many artists will do a painting like this in acrylic and then finish it off in oils… I do that some times…but prefer to do and oil painting … an oil painting… But when I do… overlap oil over an acrylic piece in a fine oil painting… I will sand with 100 grit sand paper and then finish sanding by hand with a 400 wet on wet sandpaper so it takes the oil better although sometimes I do mix the two medias… without sanding for different effect… whatever works for you… as I didn’t go to art school …I learned on the streets earning a living at it… are we having fun yet???

As an artist I have been greatly Blessed and I am happy to share/ pay forward my knowledge/skills that I learned the hard way from school of hard knocks, and many years of working in most every area of the art field

Good Luck
