War (Through the Eyes of a Child)

(please listen to the music as it enhances the poetry)

As you watch the burning of the city
Tears leave shining trails down your cheeks.
No sound escapes your trembling mouth.
Eyes see, yet your thoughts no one seeks.

Your ears strain to hear the far off dying sounds.
Your home has been destroyed, your life turned upside down.
All your remembrances from days before,
They’re all you’ve left there is no more.

Trying to close off the flow of endless tears.
But even this is no comfort, only increasing your fears.
The screaming whine of death falling from the skies.
No one dares listen, not hearing your cries
And then, the bombs fall, they drop without pity
Pounding down, all around the crumbled, dying city.

This thing of war, so foolish and sick.
The smell of death, so smoky & thick.
When some become greedy and selfishness rules
Men find the best ways to use killing tools.

I do not know if they realize
What killing and death is through a Child’s eyes.
All that is seen is engraved on the mind.
Then one will expect them a future to find?
Even deeper it sets, where no one even sees,
Lives are molded by this, hearts are broken by these.
