The Raven a poem by RestLeSsD

The raven flew
In the darkened sky.
A sound was heard,
An echoing cry.

Clouds engulfed the moon,
Mist clung to the ground.
The raven flew on
Was he drawn to the sound?

The murky darkness
Drew him in.
The eerie dampness pulling,
Toward another sin.

The raven flew
Down a long, dark hall
He came to the perch
Near the old cellar wall.

Here he sits
When the moon is high,
He guards the pit
Till the night moves by.

His intended purpose
Shall not be revealed.
For his tongue is silent,
His mind is sealed.

The raven sits,
As the night moves on.
This task is his life,
And he shall stay until dawn.

The raven sits perched
Near a crumbling wall.
He will continue his vigil
Forever heeding this call.

This is an old poem I wrote years ago that I have been wanting to illustrate. I freshened it up a bit to go with this image. The original photo (below) was taken with a Nikon CP8400. It was shot this past June while visiting friends Louisiana. It the side door of the church in the Grace Episcopal Church cemetery in St. Francisville, Louisiana, USA.
This is a historic site where a Union soldier was buried in a Southern cemetery during the Civil War in the year 1863. Read about it here: The Day the War Stopped

Beauty, eh? What a marvellous work and such wonderful words to accompany it! “Unforgiven” – major tune! Nicely done by the Four Cellos!
    Thus quoth the raven, “Nevermore!”

  • Thank you Mike… Yes, Apocalyptica is AMAZING… Thank you for the great compliment too, glad you think so…

Awesome. I love the image, poem and one of my favorite bands. Xoxo

  • Thank you Cass, I only just found Apocalyptica early this year… LOVE THEM. Course, one of my favorite bands in the 70’s was Electric Light Orchestra – ELO – and they had cellos & violins… so, I have always loved rock & classical blended…
Glad you enjoyed this with me…

Super work Rhonda. The poem and the image really do send out apocalyptic messages. I love the grainy/cloudy textures you have used. Fabulous.

  • Anna, thank you… I gave this a pencil drawing kind of look… something different from my watercolor looks of other pieces… So glad you like it and the poem…
