Continuum T-Shirt

Scott Robinson

Continuum

This has been a really fun piece for me, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it a homage to my most infulential artist of all time. The work of Vernon Courtland Johnson ( or VCJ) was what initally inspired me to actually try to get better at art/drawing. I`d alway`s scribbled, but it was him that made me think that I wanted to do it as well as I humanly could.

I`d skate for an hour to the local skate shop, and just stare at the boards, asking the shop assistant to take the boards down off the rack so I could drool over them. I was blown away by VCJ`s work, they made me giddy with excitement, and I`d get all amped up and go skate for the rest of the day. Never had I experience something like that before. Art that made me nervous, happy and full of energy all in one hit.

So with that in mind, I thought I`d wrap all my love for these works up in this piece, a testament to where I`ve been, and where I still hope to go.
A homage to VCJ`s Welinder graphic taken into the future.

You can all pay your respects to the masters work here

Secondly, it`s my entry into the show us your skull challenge in the Viva la Skull group.
Which I think suits it perfectly, while it`s not techinally my skull, It is exactly what fills my head.

Enjoy.

Mind blowing idea and exceptional execution Scott

  • Scott Robinson replied

Fun stuff eh? Glad you like it mate

  • najeroux

    najeroux

Halftone lines are exquisite, love the bubble exhaust detail and a fine example for the kiddies at home for the skull challenge. Tell me, how’d you get to be so freaking awesome? I love it like a fat kid loves diet coke and remote controls Scottie, man of magic mind making. I am going to dance while I eat fruit jam.

    najeroux

  • Scott Robinson replied

    You keep dancing Miss Leader.

While I can`t agree with freaking awesome, It was all due to the man VCJ, and my attempts to be as good as him I guess. I serious stopped dicking around with me scribbles, and buckled down like a man possessed.

    Glad you dig it!

  • Matt Simner

    Matt Simner

Just incredible – the halftone lines are just the business

  • Scott Robinson replied

    Thanks Matt..
Weird as it is, there`s not a single halftone in this, all just knifepoint lines that give the impression of tones. Fun stuff indeed.

Really happy you`re liking it mate.

  • Simon Sherry

    Simon Sherry

really fantastic Scott. Absolutely adore those lines. Now you are going to have to share them with us too.

Art that made me nervous, happy and full of energy all in one hit.
I love when this happens, and I am sure he would be totally stoked to have evoked such passion and possession in you to master your skills.

  • Scott Robinson replied

    Haha! Thanks JLBT..

I`m not sure what i could explain about those lines though, I barely understand in a “intellectual” sense myself, you`ve just got to feel your way through them, they`re like sculpting with line, which probably dosen`t make much sense until you try it.

I`m trying to find an email address for Mr Johnson so i can send it to him, just for fun.

  • jemimalovesbigted

    jemimalovesbigted

yeah do it, I am sure he would love it..

as for sharing of the lines, that’s me just being lazy and hoping some of your awesome skills travel via osmosis through the intertrons =P really bloody good they are!!

Awesome! Just awesome mate. I think you’ve out done yourself, which is sayin something!!!! hahaa. A truly great homage to the great man. Cab’s ‘Bats n Bones’ is my favourite of his, and the classic Hawk skull o’course!

  • Scott Robinson replied

Ahh cheers Nick,. I knew you`d be a VCj devotee as well..

Strangley enough, I was always a McGill, or Guererro man myself, but this one got the idea turning in my head.

  • raae

    raae

Wow dude.. you keep raising the bar higher. Now it’s official.. there is no hope for the rest of us.

  • Scott Robinson replied

I`m trying to outdo myself all the time, I guess we`re all trying to do that really, it`s where the fun is.
Plus, I put so much work into this (about 30+ hours give or take) that I`d hope it come out at least decent.

    Really glad you`re liking it.

    tiffatron

amazing scott, really enjoyed reading your inspiration behind it too – i can so identify. it really is an incredible experience when art affects you so much..
like JLBT above, i was dreaming of a tutorial for this kind of style ha ha – those lines are incredible.

ps – after viewing this entry i will no longer be entering the show us your skull challenge ha ha ha…... why bother? love your work .

  • Scott Robinson replied

Glad you enjoyed the little backstory Tiff, I guess if we`d never felt the effects of something like that, we might not be here doing what we do.

I should try to think up something about the linework, but really, just playing with it will be better than anything I could say

ps. I DEMAND you enter the comp! (please).. I`m sure you`ve got a wonderful skull in your head, just waiting to come out.

  • tiffatron

    tiffatron

hehe thanks scott i will still enter….but very sheepishly! LOL
thanks again for sharing your awesome work !

  • Pip Gerard

    Pip Gerard

you really are the king of highly detailed precision vector work!! just mindblowing the detail and work you put in. Can only imagine the hours you put into each piece.
MC Escher affected me the way you talk about VCJ

  • Pip Gerard

    Pip Gerard

Definitely the kickarse 21st Century version … in a whole other dimension compared to the original Per Welinder viking…
My favourite VCJ has always been the Mullen chess board.
Wasn’t his Caballero dragon series the biggest and most popular of all deck designs? (or perhaps I’m confused with it being the biggest collected deck?)

  • Pip Gerard

    Pip Gerard

And the Vallelly elephant comes a close second as the best in my eyes!
Actually now I’m confused whether it’s the Caballero dragon or the Hawk skull that’s the most collected deck!! Either way he’s the king when it comes to highly prized and valuable deck designs… that’s for sure.

  • Scott Robinson replied

Hey Pip, glad this has appealed to you!
I knew you`d be another VCJ appreciator.. I`m really hard pressed to name a favorite really, they all hold a very speical place in my heart/head..

  • Scott Robinson replied

    Cheers Roger,

  • Tom Douce

    Tom Douce

This design is amazing Scott. Can just imagine you sketching with all that coffee.

  • Scott Robinson replied

Great work. Its also working really well on the dark fabrics!

  • Scott Robinson replied

Thanks Mungo. I`ve actually purchased this for myself on Black. There`s a few colours that don`t work so well with the dark slate blue/black, but for the most part, it translates well enough across them all.

Just checked out the link Scott. I remember him now, good old “Mr.Powell Peralta”. Think I had three of his boards in total, remember this one the most though…

  • Scott Robinson replied

Ohhh yeah, Mr Powell Peralta himself. In the Peak of their popularity too, when boards would last, so the graphics meant something.

The only board I didn`t own over the years was a Cabelerro, my brother claimed rights to those,.

  • Danny

    Danny

I didn’t have a clue who this guy was, then i poked around your links and recognized a few designs straight away.
Then i concentrated on your story and went dug out my copy of the excellent doco
Dogtown & the Z boys ( a must see just a historical document) and revelled in the the fact that skateboarding is really a massive and influential culture and those that were bitten by the bug all those years ago are influencing a new generation with their own evolved version.
Too good Scott and many levels both artistically and cerebrally.

  • Scott Robinson replied

Thanks Danny, I had real fun with this..
It`s cool that even though the name wasn`t instantly recognisable to you, the Art itself was.

It`s weird, I know sports can be influential to people, they can define you somewhat. But Skateboarding to me was this amazing fusion of Art, Music & lifestyle, along with the act of rolling itself. 23 years later and I`m still as inspired by it as I ever was.

    exquisite line work.
Are those groupings of multiple sharp lines made of single strokes? or is it a single stroke with multiple sharp edges coming out the sides?

  • Scott Robinson replied

    Cheers Hyun..
I guess it`s closer to groupings of single sharp lines, I don`t uses an illustrator brushes.
