Great design.
Makes the eye follow it’s shape from top to bottom.
I like artwork that a bit off center but still works really well.

scott… I want to design skateboards now, do you reckon I have what it takes (please do not refer to those crappy little drawings I sent you AGES ago when answering that) – I tried to call you at the skateshop to talk about this – sorry if that was too full on, but I feel this rising and it’s not going away – anyway you weren’t there so that was the end of that – then I was hoping to see you at Naomi’s exhibition but didn’t so… – I have other drawings… I am gonna try to rework the doodles I sent you in your ‘resisto’ style… hard for a chick, cause guys, they read commics and stuff… I used to go out with a comic book guy once – not like on the simpsons – much better looking. oh, and i don’t ride skateboards but love those that do… love the whole scene really… oh another missed life!
Scott Robinson, about 1 year ago
Hey Kath, I don`t work the shop every day..I bounce between here ( graphic design job) and there, so I`m sorry I missed you. And I did have every intention of making it to friday`s exhibition too, but me being me, things got all mixed up..Your more than welcome to contact me though…I`ll be working saturday if your keen for a chat,..
Now to the question at hand…Do you have what it takes to produce skate graphics?
Before answering that, you`ve got to be aware that skateboarding ART is probably one of the most insular fields of art i`ve ever come across…and my whole life has revolved around it in some way. Skateboarding itself is open and welcoming, but the ART is held close to home..Why that is I`ve never been sure, I sent portofolio after portfolio to various companies, year after year, until I finally broke through, then once I had a series under my belt, I was more readily accepted by the other companies .
Secondly, unless you`ve someone recongnisable, it`ll never be “your” art, it`ll be you illustrating other ideas…Do a search for people like Andy Jenkins (personal fave) or Mark Gonzales, these people have enough recognition to pull sales by their names alone. And that my friend is what it all boils down to..Sales. Companies are investing a lot into the production of their product, and they almost always have very select ideas as to what they want to see..It`ll be your job to interpret that..
Third, Skate graphics have undergone technical changes over the last few years, some are printed photo/images via heat transfer, some are still screen printed. You may be required to design a graphic using nothing but 3 colours, and still acheive the results your client wants..That can be one of the more challenging aspects i`ve encountered. Again it boils down to sales, more colours means extra dollars per board..the cheaper to board to produce, the better their return.
But your gender will have nothing at all to do with it, seriously, they`re companies who are trying to make money…who makes it for them is pretty much irelevant.
Now, I`m seriously hoping that i`m not dampening your enthusiasm, please believe that this is not my intention…I just think it`s worth letting you know that it could be a battle in front of you…That shouldn`t discourage you though..Anything worthwhile is worth fighting for,...
Now the better parts..
yes, I believe you have a fine style, and you`ve shown a diverse range of abilities..all these things can only help.
If your interested in judging how the skate community recieves your work ( which believe me is quite different that a lot of other art forums) I suggest you visit http://www.skullandbonesskateboards.com/forums/index.php
Which is primarily older skaters, company owners, artists etc…Their a good bunch, I`ve gotten a lot of insight from people there…there no bullshit types, you`ll get straight answers.
If you`d like, I can get you a listing of some local and interstate skate companies that you may like to approach with your work. The sooner you get started, then sooner something will happen.
lastly..I wish you all the best of luck on your mission, and a damn fine mission it is!!
