The Emerald Swallowtail Butterfly – also known as the Emerald Peacock or Green-Banded Peacock – is found primarily in South East Asia. It has iridescent scales that give their wings a glittery appearance.
I created the background from scratch in Corel Painter, added various texture layers, and inserted this beautiful swallowtail from an image I took at the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls.

My first thought when I saw this beauty was “looking into the abyss”.
Coolness Renee.
Renee Dawson replied
Thanks Von. Yay – that’s what I was trying to achieve – to give the impression that the swallowtail was looking down into the depths of a rainforest :)

Hey wow this is really nice, my partner is petrified of butterflies. But I love them. What methods did you use to get this effect then ? And what camera equipment do you use ??
Renee Dawson replied
Thank you very much! Wow, I can’t imagine being afraid of butterflies :) A description of how this piece came about is in my write up above (right). The butterfly image itself was taken with my old Sony P&S camera – the rest of the piece I created digitally.
