Goosebumps jump up across your skin
I ask if you’re cold
You shake your head, “No”
I sit on the little stool watching
As you shave another bit of stubble
From your rosy cheek
You work cautiously, quietly
And I sit, curiously watching
I see you glance at me in the mirror
From time to time
And I just continue to stare intently
Memorizing your every move
Knowing, as the minutes go by
I am growing older
And someday that will be me
Standing there – naked from the waist up
Making myself presentable
As my own little boy watches on
Getting a glimpse of what’s ahead
For him as well
Some day, I’ll be just like you, Dad
Just Like You, Dad

Aww, what a wonderful poem! I love the intent look and adoration you can get from your kids. Lovely work!

What a precious moment. I can just see it. Thank you.

interesting – I seem to have the feeling the perspective moves in this poem – which ‘guy’ are you?

It’s all from the perspective of the child watching his father – this is actually what I imagined my brother thinking one day as he watched my dad shave years ago.

I don’t usually read writing pieces, I’m here mainly for the photography side. But occasionally I will read one. I read this one today and I have to say that it spoke to me as well as a great photo ever could. I have a 4 year old son and needless to say he has watched me shave more than a few times. When you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up, his answer is always the same. A daddy just like me. Thanks for this.
