Waving a White Flag at Reality
I’ve really had to put a lot of effort into learning to accept things over the last couple of years…I suppose this poem is a little about that and a little about extremism…I don’t believe you have to always see half glasses of water as half full or half empty, although logic would have me think if it was originally empty then it’s half full, if was originally full then it’s half empty, but mostly I simply accept that half of the glass is filled with water, for better or for worse, that’s just the way it is and I’ll find a way to work with that much liquid ;) I absolutely believe in having hope and being optimistic about the unknown, I just perhaps don’t feel the need to work myself into a state of denial that doesn’t let me prepare myself for if things don’t go so well. I hope and I dream, but I try not to expect…closed expectation can be very, very dangerous. Expect that things might turn out differently to how you expect them too…lolz…that’s probably the most balanced form of expectation. Perhaps this is a long winded way of saying ‘take it as it comes’? Hope for everything, expect nothing.

We all know this world is cruel
You can paint on sun and roses
But the truth calls you a fool
My life seems cursed by irony
Many of my dreams are burnt
But I know I’ll be fine, you see
For through my pain I’ve learnt
I don’t desire your pity
If it comes across like that
I don’t desire your sorrow
Just to help you understand
Reality isn’t pessimism
Or optimism to extremes
It isn’t always what you want
Or how a situation seems
It doesn’t know its cruelty
Or the blessings it bestows
It isn’t out to get you
Or to help you mend your woes
There is no use denying
Bad happens to good people too
There is no use in crying
That bad shouldn’t happen to you
The thing about acceptance is
It allows you to evolve
It is the only long term fix
When the problems can’t be solved
People can adapt to life
With limitations but free from despair
Cease fighting against the way things are
To begin the journey there

Hi Hayley …..........Brilliant writing and right from the heart …............ youve pulled the reader in …...... so effective you make your points ….......... I think the best line was in your description and it says “Perhaps this is a long winded way of saying ‘take it as it comes’? Hope for everything, expect nothing.” Congratulations on your feature too!! This is a fav. for me!! – David :>))

Thanks so much! I wasn’t sure I liked this piece when I wrote it, I was confused because I started off writing about one subject and then this kind of wrote itself about a different one! Sometimes wish my brain would let me in on what it was up to before it takes action…most of the time I don’t because it keeps life interesting when my own brain is surprising me!!
=D

I loved this poem…....esp the verse…..
The thing about acceptance is
It allows you to evolve
It is the only long term fix
When the problems can’t be solved
That is soo true…..I keep going in and out of this,
I’m trying so hard to accept and to learn….and move on!
Very well said and written….loved it!

Thank you so much! It’s a hard thing to train your mind to look at things from a new perspective…but I think it has to be part of the core of living happily…cause bad stuff isn’t ever going to stop happening so we might as well not waste our energy fighting against things we can’t change.
Things we can change…now those are worth fighting for!

alot of things to think about… i like your perspective of being balanced in the mind, not needing to committ to either side.

Thank u! You’re right, it’s all about balance…because really, anything could always go either way, giggle, must be the Libran in me ;)
