Griggstown Spillway, Somerset County, NJ by

After parking my car I crossed over the spillway for the Delaware and Raritan Canal before heading down a narrow footpath into the woods. After about 5 minutes onto the path, I hear a rustling in the high grass. There is a bit of a breeze so I’m not really concerned with the sound. Then it happens again, more clearly and I get the chills. Something catches my eye and I see antlers maybe 15 yards off to my right. I can barely make out the body, the grass covering up to the shoulders, but the head is clearly visible. It is a 10 point buck with a doe. He seems agitated by my presence and keeps circling. I managed to snap about 4 photos of him and then grabbed my tripod and headed straight back to the spillway, all the while certain that antlers would catch me and toss me up in the air like a cartoon character. It’s a dangerous world out there! =)

You mind how you go..It’s a beautiful shot but not worth getting trampled for…

  • Thx. Jamie…i don’t much cotton to the idea of a trampling either!! That’s when I decided to stay on the canal trail, where other people were walking and biking. =)
