There is a life size statue of Jesus on the cross in a cemetery in central New Jersey. I don’t believe I’ve ever stood under a crucifix before…imagining being one of those witnessing the passion and standing right there under Him. I wanted to capture the feet close-up….so close you want to kiss them…if they were His live feet. When I saw the gravestones in the photo after I took this, I was reminded of the scripture verse in Hebrews. One man died for all men…for all time. No longer will we lie in the grave forever separated from God. His death made the way for all men to spend eternity with Him…for all those who confess their sins and call upon His name. Amen.

The shot itself is powerful and well composed, supplemented with great composition and sepia tones and very artistic but the skeptical believer within still can’t get my head around the association of stone with life. I’m glad that this statue was an inspiring connection for you but for me sightings of such instantly reference Exodus 20 :4 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth”.

  • I sincerely appreciate when a photo I take is able to move someone to honest contemplation.=) You are quite right in stating God’s command regarding making graven images or icons. Exodus 20:5 goes on to say: …you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. In fact, it is really all one sentence, 20:4 & 5…it’s too bad the sentence has been divided (by well meaning scholars I’m sure). The statue in this cemetery was probably erected to bring some measure of comfort to the visitors of those interred here, to remind them of Jesus and His redemption for those souls who put their trust in Him. I personally, do not believe in putting a face to Jesus, because, 1) we do not know what He looked like and 2) He is spirit and He is truth. Nor do I personally like to only dwell on Him as being on the cross because He is no longer there but is risen and alive. Thank you for bringing up an excellent point, I hope I have helped to clarify my image!

Love the close up. Makes for an interesting point of view.

  • Thank you dear. As painful and heartbreaking as it is to look upon, I wanted to bring the reality of what the Lord did for us right up close to the viewer.
