    I don’t remember the title of the story. I think it was in a collection of stories – MAYBE “The Bachman Books” (early works by King). It was about a woman who kept finding shortcuts ….. at some point, she discovered that folding the map ……

    Strangely, I recall the story fairly often, as I am exploring unfamiliar roads thru wild country.
