I Heard He Had a Style
Many, many years ago I was at the Bottom Line in the Village to listen to Don McLean and was mesmerized by the simplicity of his performance. Lori Lieberman (1971) wrote Killing Me Softly with His Blues in response to seeing Don McLean. It was later covered by Roberta Flack (1973) and still later by the Fugees (1996).
Killing Me Softly is a song that came to mind as I made this image which has nothing to do with Don McClean, but does have to do with being moved by music.
I worry about the fate of music in schools as I hear from friends that so many school systems seem to be cutting the arts from their offerings for students. In my world, there is nothing as essential or important as preserving the arts both in and out of school.

Important sentiments, Mary Ann, it’s so hard to protect the arts in a world so preocuppied with the pursuit of money for it’s own sake. But this type of digital democratization might just be a key – Bravo for your skillful contributions.

Thank you Ken. Your words mean so much:)

You sure are preaching to the choir here – A lot of kids, me included, got squished early on because we were not “traditionally” artistic, therefore not artistic at all – I wish there were outlets for children at the youngest ages to just go crazy and use their imaginations – tap into all their senses and explore music, visual arts, literature – and have that creative spirit celebrated early on so it can develop freely throughout life. By the way this is fantastic version of this song!!! Am I babbling? It is the end of the day – but wonderful creation Mary Ann – Thanks.
Mary Ann Reilly replied
I am so with you on this NEls. I think homes and schools, and communities where children and teenagers are supported to express themselves in visual and musical, dramatic and movement arts and so on are essential.

“I went down to the crossroad
Fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroad
Fell down on my knees
Asked the lord above “Have mercy now,
Save poor Bob if you please.”
Yeeooo, standin’ at the crossroad
Tried to flag a ride
Ooo ooo eee
I tried to flag a ride
Didn’t nobody seem to know me babe
Everybody pass me by
Standin’ at the crossroad babe
Risin’ sun goin’ down
Standin’ at the crossroad babe
Eee eee eee, risin’ sun goin’ down
I believe to my soul now,
Poor Bob is sinkin’ down
You can run, you can run
Tell my friend Willie Brown
You can run, you can run
Tell my friend Willie Brown
(Th)’at I got the crossroad blues this mornin Lord
Babe, I’m sinkin down
And I went to the crossroad momma
I looked east and west
I went to the crossroad baby
I looked east and west
Lord, I didn’t have no sweet woman
Ooh-well babe, in my distress”
I’m in a Robert Johnson mood today. Fabulous photo.
Mary Ann Reilly replied
Well I’m going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
