A Time to Break Silence
A homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On April 4, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered the speech, Beyond Vietnam—A Time to Break Silence, at Riverside Church in New York City. I believe that his speech, although delivered more than 30 years ago, is nonetheless quite timely given man of our Middle East and economic policies today.
In this extraordinary speech, Dr. King says, “A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand, we are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s roadside, but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”
In this new series (Peace Series), I highlight those among us who have broken the silence like Dr. King did, shining light on the urgent need in 1967 and I would urge today to restructure the “ediface which produces beggars.”
Reforming the Jericho Road is the critical work we must get right this time.
I have included a link to the speech below. Follow that link to hear Dr. King deliver the speech.

This gave me the chills – your passion for social justice coupled with your artistic vision makes your work truly iconic in my view. beautiful, mary ann :))
Mary Ann Reilly replied
social justice matters. thanks Anne. I think it was Toni Morrison who said, If art doesn’t make us good, what is it there for…

And, if you check the dates, that speech was delivered exactly one year before he died!
This is WONDERFUL!! You really captured the spirit of the speech here!
FABULOUS!
Mary Ann Reilly replied
Yes, I knew it was a year prior to his death in Memphis. I often wondered if this speech was the reason for his murder. I imagine today with the Patriot Act (what a name) one uttering what Dr. King did that night might be jailed. Thanks so much for your comments:)

You arer without any doubt, very talented indeed. Love this…interestingly i did MLK for an analysis of rhetorical theory…he was a remarkbale human being and his influence is extraordinary:) Well done Mary Ann:)
Mary Ann Reilly replied
I was so surprised when i was in Northern Ireland how much of Dr. King was referenced in street murals, comments, graffitti. I think of Dr. King as a USA presence, forgetting the vast influence this one man had and still has. I often think of where we might have evolved to had Dr. King lived. Thanks Ralph for your lovely comments. Means a lot.

Yes, it seems that changing the ediface that produces beggars is the game. I often like to ask the question: If i gave you a million (or a billion) dollars, what would you do with it to change the world for better?
Mary Ann Reilly replied
Insightful question: I’m confident it is the underlying attitudes that allow for that “haves and have-nots” to exist that needs to be reformed. If I had that amount of $, I’d fund community-based arts projects to start.
