the flight of the seabird and the wave of the arms, amidst the waves rushing in
lovely, it works for me !
Mary Ann Reilly replied
I spent about 30 minutes just taking shot after shot of this man walking the edge of the ice. Opening his arms was spontaneous. It is rare when the Hudson River freezes this far south in so dramatic a way. Glad you liked the work:)

So very very much I want to say about this brilliant piece – so much. I will have to re-visit it before fleshing out my response to this profoundly moving image. Like most great art, it hands over to the viewer the power to see what she/he chooses to, bound only by those limitations inherent in the pictorial elements of the photo – the bird, the sea, the sky, a man with his arms outstretched. I recall a scene from a beach in either a Kafka or Camus novel, followed closely by a description of a condemned man in a cell, the final words “First the first time ever, I laid my heart open to the benign indifference of the universe”. Never forgot that quote. Anecdotally, when I was going under the knife for open heart surgery, in the OR the anesthesiologist leaned over me and asked “Any words before I put you under?” [This was a far more riskier surgery than 98% of open heart surgeries]. Don’t ask me why, but my words to him before going under were – you guessed it – “For the first time ever…” I vaguely recall hearing a quiet gasp escape his lips before my prayer for unconsciousness, the devoutly wished for oblivion was answered.
Mary Ann Reilly replied
It’s from Camus’s The Stranger. Quote something to say in the OR room before heart surgery.
I think often of Joyce’s Portrait where he writes, “The artist, like the God of the creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.”
What I appreciate so much here at RB, is that the work leaves you such as it is—and then others claim it via their comments. I learn so much by what others post and write.
Thanks Kevin for your very fine response.
