It's Bonus Time Over at AIG (AGAIN)

There seems to be no end to the greed at American International Group. Edward Liddy, chairman, tried to make the case that bonuses are needed to keep skilled executives. Have they no shame at all?

The other image is one I took in Philadelphia by the 30th Street Station. This homeless man was sharing what little bread he had with the pigeons.

Why is it in America that we reward the first, and blame the second?

Can it get any more outrageous? Great composite and statement

the horror is that it can and probably will get worse unless we organize and do something.

I am so glad you did this. I am so outraged, words fail me. I think a major story should be put together “Who Are These Men & Women?” and spread across the internet, which lists each and every “skilled executive” who’s receiving a bonus, the dollar amount of the bonus, their position in the company, and a recent photo. They should be made so visible they feel ashamed to be seen at AIG, indeed anywhere outside their (palatial, no doubt) homes.

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

i think this is an excellent idea Kevin. Their faces should be made public. their neighbors should know. We all should know.

I read the reason they give is that they cannot allow bonuses to be “dictated by the government” – perhaps not exact words, but something to that effect.

Well, how about having bonuses dictated by the fact that they lost incredible billions of dollars?

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

How much does one need? If a homeless man can share the piece of bread he has with pigeons, can’t these fatcat execs stop stuffing their pockets long enough to see they are quickly destroying our country, the globe?

  • JimFilmer

    excellent statement…great image

It’s rather ironic that the same people who repeatedly call for low taxes and minimal government intervention are willing to line up and take government money to bail them out of the quagmire, only to go deeper into it ‘cos they can’t get their snouts out of the trough.

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

i think they got more than their snouts in the trough this time or perhaps it really is all the time:(

  • richardseah

    richardseah

Yeah! Lots of greedy fat cats.

I live in a country where the Prime Minister, other government ministers and even senior civil servants are ALL paid much more than Obama. In fact, someone once calculated that tehe Prime Minister of Singapore draws a salary equivalent to that of SEVEN leading world presidents and prime ministers!

Reason for this is to “attract top talents” into government and also to “prevent corruption”. LOL! and Sigh!

Recently, there was a big hoo-hah among local netizens after a civil servant (permanent secretary) wrote an article in the newspapers about how he and wife and son spent their five-week holiday at the Cordon Blu Cooking School in France!

Cooking lessons alone, excluding air tickets and five weeks of hotels in France, came up to about US$30,000!

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

Richard, thanks for the story. I did an interview with a gray panther about 30 or more years ago. He was about 80 at that time and spent about 5 hours telling me all about the absence of international borders when it comes to greed, especially corporate greed and military power. Seems he was right.

Fantastic commentary, Mary Ann. Unfortunately, AIG is not alone in their greed. Almost every publicly traded corporation in america does the same thing. They issue shares, back date options, buy themselves jets and cars and butlers and maids with company funds and write themselves huge performance bonuses that bleed much needed capital from the company and create tremendous share dilution for common investors. And what have they done with these windfalls? Invest in Chinese companies and infrastructure, most likely. And then they have the chutzpah to cry about how unfair the tax system is. Well, this is what happens when elected officials have to run for reelection every two years, campaigns are privately funded, half the electorate doesn’t trust the media, and votes are cast on social issues (abortion, guns, prayer in school) rather than fiscal policies. America will never be conquered, she’ll be sold piecemeal while her citizens fuss and dither over “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas”.

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

It’s why we need to stand up as that citizenry and DEMAND with our vote and pockets that we refuse to fund these thieves and vote for those who fund them REGARDLESS of their political party.

Great image and commentary. I couldn’t agree more. Will it ever change? There seems no end to the limits of arrogance and greed at the top levels of corporations. Don’t know what will change it. Do we need more women at the top? not sure.

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

Well it couldn’t hurt. We need morally strong people and a populace who takes action:)

Well… – they just raked in $170b in funding, surely $169m is easy to justify for an achievement like that, that’s not even 0.1%!!
    (Yes, I am being sarcastic!)
If these companies find that they cannot wiggle their way out of the contracts granting those bonuses, I wonder if they might be more creative if the bail-out money would be conditional on such bonuses not being paid, i.e. if there are such contractual obligations then they get no money. You reckon they would let the company go down the drain rather than finding a way to get rid of these bonuses? And if so, would it be a loss?
    Oh well.
Great piece of art as it does raise all these issues and discussions!

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

Someone told me that the $ we paid AIG could have paid off everyone’s existing mortgage in the USA. Far better choice. Thanks Ronald for your insights.

There is a “correction to the economy” happening. But it ain’t the “correction” the finance industry lunatics think it is. It’s the insane system exposing itself for the madness that it is. The indulgent blinded themselves with greed and finally brought themselves unstuck. This economic depression will create a different world from the last. As long as we remember who caused it.

let’s hope and insure it is a more just one…

Great work and comment. Here in Australia there are moves to have bonuses and CEO payments subject to approval by a majority of share holders..

Homelessness everywhere is a growing concern. Most major cities have occupancy rates in the central business districts of around 70% or less. These vacant buildings or floors of buildings could be converted into homeless shelters and emergancy accomodation at little expense….

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

You’d think with all the wealth everyone could have a safe home.

“Skilled” at what? Conning the government and the taxpayer? For the amount that’s being paid to bail out AIG, I would hope that some sort of taxpayer representation on the board would be obtained, so that someone will ask difficult questions.

  • Mary Ann Reilly replied

yes, with 80% ownership, you think the average Joe/Jane would have a seat at that table.
