My Grandfather served in the war on this ship. An amazing image thankyou – turning something previously distressing to many old timers into a beautifully enchanting image :)

Thanks Renae, it was a very interesting visit, I am no sure if you have been to see Whyalla, the living conditions were apallingly poor. The fact these guys servered so well and survived in such terrible conditions is testamount to their character.

And their drinking habits! I have been there not so long ago and have taken my Grandfather back also. He wanted to go but it was extremely distressing for him. He was a stoker – under decks in the heat and the memories were overwhelming for him. The conditions these guys lived in have a lot to answer for – both for the men that served on the ships and for their families that sufferred there after. Still, your image is beautiful. It just shows that beauty can be found in the most adverse of places.
