5-0 In The Shallow End – Empire Park Skate Park

A skater that came from Brisbane to work in Newcastle for a while enjoys his time off work to do some skateboarding at Empire Park Skate Park in Bar Beach, New South Wales.

Here he is seen applying lots of pressure to his back foot to stay balanced during a front side 5-0 grind in the shallow end of the skate bowl.

Approaching the “lip” or top of the ramp, begin to lift up your front wheels to do a wheelie and a kick-turn at the same time, while riding along the coping (top edge of the ramp) with lots of pressure on your back foot to “power through” the coping and extend the length of the grind. If you approach the top of the ramp with a wide, carving angle and you manage to get nearly all of your weight over the coping and you’ve got a lot of speed the longer you will grind – unless you’re just going way to fast and something goes wrong, and you hang up and slam!

There are three ways to ride/orientate yourself on a skateboard – straight-on, backside and frontside. Backside is with your back to the turn, frontside is the opposite, and straight (ahead) is just that.

I enjoy the whole creative process from beginning to end and seek to discover and portray the world in all of it’s rich, intense colours and interesting forms, textures and subjects. I draw inspiration from the harmonious colour schemes often present in the natural environment when creating my Graphic Designs, or composing a Photograph or other work.
