Nose Slide – Empire Park Skate Park

A local skater performs an advanced skate trick called a nose slide on the concrete ledge at the side of the street skating course in Bar Beach, Australia.

The image was caught using a Canon 450D and a standard Canon 55 – 250 mm lens set at wide.

Heavy, grinding Grunge Music has been popular in youth culture (and with adults, of course!) for over 20 years and one of the greatest Grunge Rock bands of all time is Soundgarden! The following song is one of their greatest – lots of energy and “fire” and it’s all played and sung so skillfully.

Soundgarden – Spoonman

The trick is performed by approaching the object you want to skate on at a slight angle, not exactly parallel to it. Ollie beside the object and try to get the tail a bit higher than the ledge so you can concentrate on locking the tail into the block/ledge preferably with the wheels/trucks stuck hard up against the thing you are sliding on. Leaning back towards your heels just a little bit gives you some power to let the board slide across the ledge. When you finish sliding or hit the end of the ledge, you can pop a nollie (nose ollie) to get back onto the ground, or just push really hard on your back foot to force the board down onto the ground so you can ride away.

I enjoy the whole creative process from beginning to end and seek to discover and portray the world in all of it’s rich, intense colours and interesting forms, textures and subjects. I draw inspiration from the harmonious colour schemes often present in the natural environment when creating my Graphic Designs, or composing a Photograph or other work.

We have these guys here doing these tricks in public places. Fascinating what they can do but sometimes it really is dangerous and frightening to watch. Controlled boarding sites are one thing but public places are not so safe. Still I admire their moxy. Great capture James, bet you were wishing for your turn:)x

  • Street skating is still very popular here too. I did it for years and years before they started to build skate parks for us. I’ve always liked ramp skating most of all and when we got skate parks I was less interested in going street skating. Yes, there are many dangers in street skating – especially hand rails down stairs – terrifying stuff unless you work up to mastering that kind of skating. What’s Moxy? Is it like Bravery? :)) I was giving my body a day to heal a little bit from the injuries the day before and then I skated the day after taking these photos. Thanks for your speedy comment! :))xx

Moxy:::: the unrealistic belief that you are superman :)))))

  • Why can’t there be more than one Superman? Undercover/plain clothes ones that don’t share his hobbies and interests. :-))xo

these definitely count as superpowers in my book – nice catch!

  • Hey Shipmate, how’s ya been, aye, arggh! ;)) ROFL It’s actually a pretty basic trick compared to the super-technical ones, but it’s still always impressive to see it well executed like this one was.

    Great action capture again!

  • Thanks Berns! Next time I think I’ll take a few shots using a really slow shutter speed and panning with the skater – it gives a radical background blur I’ve captured before in a Photo Competition Brief last year.

    superb photo capture James

  • Thank you Solomon! :)) It’s so easy to shoot skating with an SLR compared to the pocket camera and the limited capabilities it possessed.

Excellent timing, great capture !!!! ☺♥

  • Thanks a lot! Being a skater for so long makes it a lot easier to know what’s happening (or about to happen), where to point the camera and when to click. :))xx

    excellent capture! ;)

  • Thanks Karin! ;-) It just needed one more aspect to improve it technically – the rule of thirds for the position of the skater. But he’s clear and hasn’t had his head or board chopped off in the framing so that’s something.
