Backside Melon Air – Empire Park Skate Park, Newcastle, Australia

A young local skater (they’re called “Grommets” in both Surfing and Skateboarding and other Adrenaline Sports) performs a skate trick called a “Backside Melon Air” in the deep end of the skate bowl at Empire Park skate park, in Newcastle.

An Artist on Red Bubble called “jammingene” told me that his favourite band is called “Testament”. I watched some video clips that he told me about and I immediately found a new band to listen to – they play excellent Heavy Metal music. Their music reminds me in some ways of Metallica and Megadeth.

I enjoy the whole creative process from beginning to end and seek to discover and portray the world in all of it’s rich, intense colours and interesting forms, textures and subjects. I draw inspiration from the harmonious colour schemes often present in the natural environment when creating my Graphic Designs, or composing a Photograph or other work.

Just OMG! He is rockin this one. Oh and you did pretty good too. ;)xx

  • Thanks very much! :-)x It’s not really well exposed/lit though – too close to straight on into the sun, which I usually avoid at all costs. He’s only about 12 years old but he’s a dedicated skater.

I love the action in the foreground and the guy asleep in the background!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot! That guy wasn’t asleep – it was very sunny and he was sending a Text Message or something.

Great shot…try to crop off the white car and than from the right till nearly square…will enhance the WoW factor :)

  • Thanks for your comment! Nowadays, I crop maybe only 2% of my photos using Photoshop or other software. I always frame things up so that anything I really don’t want to be visible in the shot is never framed-in from the moment of capture. Digital cropping diminishes (slightly) the images resolution and it’s overall quality and I hate that possibility. In a full scene like this, it’s inevitable that there might be some visual distractions present somewhere in the image, but your eye is drawn straight to that kid doing an aerial trick so those unwanted elements are fine by me in these situations. I still appreciate (and understand) your viewpoint.
