Blasting Air! – Empire Park Skate Park, Newcastle, Australia

A local Skateboarder named Brad blasts a Backside Aerial about 2 feet out the top of the 11 or 12 foot deep end of the Skate Bowl on the side wall.

There are three ways to ride/orientate yourself on a skateboard – straight-on, backside and frontside. Backside is with your back to the turn or riding surface, frontside is the opposite, and straight (ahead) is just that.

This is a Backside Air. I know what that title/trick name would remind anyone of – A Fart! :)) It’s a skate trick where you reach down to grab the side of your skateboard behind your front heel just before you launch out of the top of a ramp and into the air. As you leave the lip (the top of the ramp) you put pressure on your back foot but also lean forward from your waist and hold onto the skateboard tightly while turning your shoulders to make the board turn 180 degrees in the air. While looking down at the wall/transition, aim to land in the top couple of feet of the surface so you don’t “plug it” which can result in a heavy and painful slam and injury.

A Skate Thrash song that has lots of energy and intensity -
The Faction – Skate and Destroy

The shot was taken with a Canon 450D and a standard Canon 55 – 250 mm lens set at:
F-stop: f/5
Exposure time: 1/2000 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Exposure bias: -0.3 step
Focal length: 70 mm
WB: Sunny

I enjoy the whole creative process from beginning to end and seek to discover and portray the world in all of it’s rich, intense colours and interesting forms, textures and subjects. I draw inspiration from the harmonious colour schemes often present in the natural environment when creating my Graphic Designs, or composing a Photograph or other work.

great capture James! thanks for the additional info in the description too :)

  • Thanks for your speedy comment, Karin! I hope you’re O.K! :-))

That info is for the RB Skateboarding Group and anyone else that might like to know how these tricks are performed. If you don’t skate it would all be a mystery how the tricks are done – they seem impossible, really. And they were impossible for the first few decades of Skateboarding History. The boards wouldn’t allow those ticks to be done and besides that, skaters had not even imagined those manoeuvres and what we cannot imagine we cannot accomplish. :)
