When I Tells Ya, Skate Varmint, Skate!

Empire Park, Bar Beach – New South Wales, Australia – April 2011.

The old school skaters held a re-union for people that have been skating since the mid to late 1980’s.

This is a skater called R J Barbaro (who skates for Creature Skateboards and a few other skate companies) doing a skate trick called a Frontside Hip Ollie from the deep section of the skate bowl over the “hip” and into the shallow end.

This photograph was taken with a Canon 450D and a standard Canon 18 – 55 mm lens set at 45 mm, ISO-200 and 1/2000 second in Shutter Priority Mode.

I recently photographed the Yosemite Sam photo which was part of a full wall of Graffiti and I digitally chopped up that shot to incorporate into this artwork.

The original digital photograph, captured as a RAW file:

The edited image, available for sale:

I enjoy the whole creative process from beginning to end and seek to discover and portray the world in all of it’s rich, intense colours and interesting forms, textures and subjects. I draw inspiration from the harmonious colour schemes often present in the natural environment when creating my Graphic Designs, or composing a Photograph or other work.

    cool bananas!!
    nice work my friend

  • Thanks a lot my friend! I’d tried using Yosemite in a three-up collage but it wasn’t happening. He found a cool space here, though. :))

    Wow… fabulous action shot.. !!! ☺♥

  • Sometimes, I was a bit “under-gunned” with the short lens but I just moved in a lot closer than with the 250 mm one. Thanks a lot! :))x

Nice catch James! If you didnt have the text in this image I would of almost though Yosimite was painted on the concrete at the top of the bowl.

  • If you look closely at his hat and his nose, the brick wall that he’s painted on is still really visible. I dropped the opacity of Yosemite and the text to about 75% so it didn’t dominate the whole image – especially the skater. Thanks Al!

I went back there today and shot many different ways – higher ISO, low ISO, flash, no flash, zoom, no zoom, facing sun, away from sun, etc ,etc – I almost tried it all, and it paid dividends.
