A Big, Carving Line

Based on the torrential rain and thunderstorms last night and early this morning it had seemed like it might rain all weekend. Not great weather for surfing, enjoying some sunshine and relaxing at the beach on a long weekend! But when I arrived at the Cowrie Hole late in the afternoon for a photo shoot, the sun was out and the waves had really grown in size compared to what the surf was like on Wednesday – when the waves were only about 2 foot high. There were lots of surfers out at Flat Rock and they were enjoying some smooth, powerful waves before sunset. This knee boarder was drawing big, powerful lines on lots of his waves and this is a great cut back that covers a lot of territory.

Cool shot James – Love it xx

  • Thank you Gail! :-)xx It’s a really great location to shoot (and to surf) – you can get so close to the waves (standing behind a pool) so a 250 mm lens still catches the surfer with nice “in-frame” scale.

    brilliant light and action
    cheers

    :))

  • Thank you Maggie! :-)) It was quite late in the afternoon, so the light was softer than what I often shoot in. Knee Boarding is a very rare pursuit nowadays (body boarding replaced it for most people) and only a handful of these riders live in my city now – they’ve been doing it for decades!

You’ve really been busy. All these are wonderful of course and so expressive

  • It must seem like I’ve been busy, but anything that I ever upload to RB nowadays is only a tiny fraction of all of the shots that I’ve taken but not chosen to upload as yet. But yet I haven’t been taking many photos compared to previous times where I’d take photo’s nearly every day for weeks and weeks at a time. I was really happy with this shot- it’s a powerful turn, demonstrated by all that water shooting out from his boards fins. :)
