Tawny Frogmouth
I went over to this tree to take some photos of things on the ground around it. I looked up to see if there was anything that really caught my eye as a potential shot. As I looked across the branches I saw a Tawny Frogmouth just sitting right there and forgot about the tree altogether ! I got my first Tawny Frogmouth capture, ever !
They are not owls, but they are awake at night and sleep during the daytime. Unlike owls that hunt and catch prey using their claws, the Frogmouth catches it’s prey in it’s beak.

Tawny Frogmouth belongs to the following groups:
! 100% !, All Around the Styles, Australian Bush ☼ ( N0 Abstracts or Macros please! - ie aspects of realistic Landscape views Thank you!), Australian Contemporary Photography, Australian Landmarks and Icons, Australian Wildlife, AW Welcome Center, Birds and Creatures of Flight, Everyday Life, Landscape and Abstract Photography, Landscape Photography, Live, Love, Dream: , Nature's Wonders, New South Wales Photography, Safe Haven, The Birds, The Patchwork , The true beauty and Vibrant and Vivid Color Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints and Mounted Prints

It was trying to sleep and I wasn’t helping with the flash going off every few seconds, but it didn’t fly away. Thanks for looking Angel ! :)

Wow ! Your English is getting very good Monika ! :)
Yes, with that green stripe that tree looks like Army Camouflage. The bird was trying to sleep there. Thanks for making it one of your faves !

And I love owls, good for you! I have never photographed an owl, maybe I’ll go on an owl hunt today. Great shot once again, James. – Cora

I couldn’t believe it when I saw it – I hadn’t seen one for ages. It was really close to the skate park I had been skating at. It was staring straight at me too and I thought it might swoop at me !

Don’t you just love when that happens!!!
reflector replied
I do, but the hard bit was being quiet to avoid scaring it away – the ground was covered in bark and dead branches – ” crack, crick, craaccck ! ” with every step ! :)

Thank you Lori ! I just did some research and saw a couple of photos that confirmed it’s not an owl it’s a Tawny Frogmouth – new text up there on the right. I just learned that fact today. Thanks for the fave !

Sometimes we are just lucky – although it pays to see the snake we are about to step on too…
No, seriously, I just love the way animals sometimes happen along, and when you find them this way, it’s very personal and exciting – like a special gift! Like that wonderful olive bark on this gum.
reflector replied
Yeah it was awesome ! It was hiding in the tree behind the skate park. I had skated and felt like a rest and went looking for textural shots, looked up and spotted it there !

reflector replied
I was amazed to see that bird there, silently perched ! Trying to sleep. Until I came along and snapped away for 5 minutes from many angles trying to catch it in a way it didn’t disappear into the background as nature had intended. Thanks a lot Sleepy !
