Tawny Frogmouth

Tawny Frogmouth

I went over to this tree to take some photos of things on the ground around it. I looked up to see if there was anything that really caught my eye as a potential shot. As I looked across the branches I saw a Tawny Frogmouth just sitting right there and forgot about the tree altogether ! I got my first Tawny Frogmouth capture, ever !

They are not owls, but they are awake at night and sleep during the daytime. Unlike owls that hunt and catch prey using their claws, the Frogmouth catches it’s prey in it’s beak.

Tawny Frogmouth belongs to the following groups:

And I love owls, good for you! I have never photographed an owl, maybe I’ll go on an owl hunt today. Great shot once again, James. – Cora

I couldn’t believe it when I saw it – I hadn’t seen one for ages. It was really close to the skate park I had been skating at. It was staring straight at me too and I thought it might swoop at me !

Don’t you just love when that happens!!!

  • reflector replied

I do, but the hard bit was being quiet to avoid scaring it away – the ground was covered in bark and dead branches – ” crack, crick, craaccck ! ” with every step ! :)

Sometimes we are just lucky – although it pays to see the snake we are about to step on too…
No, seriously, I just love the way animals sometimes happen along, and when you find them this way, it’s very personal and exciting – like a special gift! Like that wonderful olive bark on this gum.

  • reflector replied

Yeah it was awesome ! It was hiding in the tree behind the skate park. I had skated and felt like a rest and went looking for textural shots, looked up and spotted it there !

I was amazed to see that bird there, silently perched ! Trying to sleep. Until I came along and snapped away for 5 minutes from many angles trying to catch it in a way it didn’t disappear into the background as nature had intended. Thanks a lot Sleepy !
