Thanks Dinghy, a friend in the USA gave me an invaluable tip on the importance of good lighting. This is straight from the camera, like most shots I use nowadays. It is a great building, and very important in my towns history.

Its interesting that in centuries past Newcastle retained so much more of its mineral wealth than now even though today it is the largest coal port in the world. Witness the crumbling of the GPO, town hall and Hunter Street with not enough money to spend on basic infrastructure and maintenance. Look at the grand old pump house in Carrington and ask why the great public buildings just don’t get built anymore in Newcastle and most are left to rot. Let King Coal pay its way, a levy of 2 cents a tonne to Newcastle would save all our wonderful landmarks.

  • reflector replied

    Laughing here ! ” King Coal ” – very creative !
I have to agree that many majestic buildings are just falling to pieces. Tear it down and rebuild is the new mantra and has been for decades. I couldn’t believe what the Post Office looked like after I hadn’t seen it for years – a shambles ! Customs House looks incredibly well looked after however.
Thanks if you were the one who chose to feature this ! I thanked Keith too.
