Christmas Beetle at Cosy Corner by

Christmas beetles (Anoplognathus) belong to the Scarab family and include flower chafers, cock chafers, and fiddle beetles. This one was spending his summer holidays at Cosy Corner, (near St Helens, Tasmania), on a Melaleuca bush. I liked the contrast between the mauve and green.

I live in a small place – Tasmania, the smallest state of Australia – but it is a place of great beauty and diversity. I love the beauty found in the natural world and in the people around me. awww it does look like a christmas beetle with the colors and everything.

  • Thanks Allise
They are very beautiful and have a metallic sheen that seems to change colour. This response is very late – apologies!

You have a real talent to bring out detail yet keep the image soft and almost serene. Exellent work…

  • Thank you Steve. That is high praise. I take a lot of care with setups – making sure the light is even throughout the frame, if necessary by casting a shadow. I think backgrounds are very important in good images, so try to keep unwanted items out.

Oh this is truly beautiful – the colours go perfectly well together – like the beetle was made for the flower and vice versa. I really like this.

  • Thank you Samantha

your image is beautiful, and the colours look so lovely together…..the strange thing is, I realized just now, that these beetles are not as common as when I was younger….we used to see them all the time, now I can’t remember how many years it has been since i saw one….. sad to say, maybe photos are all that is left of them……?

  • I think you are right Wendy – I remember seeing a lot more of them as a child. Perhaps as children we sought them out. Thank you for your comment!
