The Sentinel
This tiny bird orchid, (Chiloglottis sp), was standing guard at the Kate Reed Reserve in Launceston when a final straggling sunray broke through the surrounding trees to illuminate him.
Chiloglottis orchids are pollinated by deceived male thynnine wasps who transfer pollen from one plant to another while believing they are lavishing their attentions on a female of their own species.

Hi David
I have been told the Flying Duck Orchid pollinated in the same way as this little fellow, nature has a wonderful way of doing things. what a great surprise to see it in the ray of sunlight, great photo and good colour.
Cheers Rod.

Many of the Australian orchids are wasp or other insect pollinated. The Large Duck Orchids (Caleana major) are pollinated by male sawflies (Pterygophorus genus). I don’t have that information floating round in my head – I had to look it up! Thanks for the comment Rod!
