This shot is a drive by shooting of the Kirkstone Pass in Windermere uk.
I got up at 3am that morning and spent most of my time in the valley by the lake taking shots of the mist. At around 7am I wondered if a slightly higher altitude would help my view. So I left to drive up the misty hill road at around 7.30am in hopes of a good view. During the journey I realised that I was in fact I was very late to return to the hotel to grab breakfast with my partner (which I had pre arranged the day before for 8am) oops. I was now 25 minutes away.
As I did a U-Turn (5 point turn as the road was so small) and drove down the 18 percent steep road I noticed two things.
1/ A grazing sheep which I nearly ran over.
2/ That the sun had broken through the mist and cleared a view which looked quite nice.
So I grabbed this shot while my nerves were coming back to normal. This is actually shot through the open window of the car, hand held with the camera resting on the passenger window

I hope you like it.

This shot is also available from a photobook collection called ‘Mementos’ by

Stunning shot, and I love the story around the image too. Fabulous for hand held and just filters – there is a wonderful range of tones in the image and had you not said I would have wondered whether it was a subtle HDR, but no – winning shot! :) x

  • Many thanks for the lovely comment. I was very surprised how it came out as it didn’t look that great on camera and I almost deleted it. You can see the effect of the double .9 grad filter on the top left.

More than like! Stunning image, great story. How was breakfast, or did you have to sleep on the couch that night?

  • Many thanks for the lovely comment. I put on 3kg in weight so breakfast was definitely good and luckily ate on time. :-)
