In My Grandfather's Office

The smooth rich mahogany grain
Flows across the finished top,
Down through the lucid movements
And hollow sliding song of the many
Drawers and compartments,
And into the sturdy, stylized legs.
Is it so wrong that I should sow
Into my grandfather’s desk
Three letters in bold, carefully carving out
Thin wood chips with a dulled letter opener
Until the right angles take the shape C.M.H,
So later when he sits to bills and headaches
He may sort through it all to find me underneath
And perhaps remember me as I remember him,
With love, with fond fascination,
Years ago, in my grandfathers office.
