RED RAG 03

Oooh it’s cold in RR’s paddock this morning, so I’m feeling a little frostier than normal.
RR has been perusing the bubble of late and has decided all this ‘nicey-nicey’ stuff is just a little too ‘nicey-nicey’ for him.
So this week’s bubble bursting topic is:

WHY DO WE HAVE TO BE SOOOO NICE TO EACH OTHER ON RB. HOW ABOUT A BIT OF COLD, HARD TRUTHS PEOPLE. HOW ABOUT WE BAN THE WORDS ‘NICE’ ‘FANTASTIC’ ‘WOW’ INCREDIBLE’ ‘AWESOME’ AND ‘GREAT’ FOR A WHOLE WEEK. NOT TO MENTION RR’S PET HATE ‘THANKS.’ IF THIS IS AN ARTIST’S SITE WHAT ARE WE SAYING? ARTIST’S CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH????’ AND ONE FINAL QUESTION-WHY AM I SUDDENLEY WRITING IN CAPS?
Damn hoofs – they always get in the way on keyboards….snort….get RAGGIN’!!!!!!!!!

This is a crap topic! – Is that better?

I’m too nice to get worked up over this one. :)

I THINK IT’S INCREDIBLY AWESOME THAT THERE ARE SUCH A GREAT BUNCH OF FANTASTIC, NICE, PEOPLE ON REDBUBBLE.

I DON’T CARE IF PEOPLE WRITE IN ALL CAPS IF THAT IS EASIER FOR THEM – WHO KNOWS WHAT THE REASONS MIGHT BE. WOW! I WOULDN’T BE WITHOUT THEM….. I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THEY’VE MADE THE EFFORT TO COMMENT! MOST OF THE TIME WE KNOW NOTHING MORE ABOUT THE PERSON OTHER THAN THE WORK WE ARE SEEING – SO DON’T JUDGE WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, OR WHAT YOU ARE IGNORANT ABOUT!!! IT’S A BIT LIKE CRITICIZING PEOPLE WITH A WEIGHT PROBLEM, OR A LITERACY PROBLEM, WITHOUT KNOWING THE FACTS BEHIND THE PROBLEM, OR CRITICIZING SOMEONE WHO STUTTERS…....

MY MOTTO IS, IF YOU CAN’T SAY ANYTHING DECENT, DON’T SAY IT AT ALL – AFTER ALL, WHO THE BLOODY HELL DO WE THINK WE ARE TO BE NASTY ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE??

So there you have my opinion. I think I’ve got my message across, and I sincerely hope I wasn’t too nice about it. For goodness sake, isn’t there enough cruelty and nastiness in the world without bringing it into RB?

It’s not about cruelty and nastiness it’s about honesty. What I draw from someone’s artwork may not be their intention but it’s just as real, positive or negative.

I don’t think people should just attack stuff, but healthy, well thought out, descriptive criticism should be encouraged. Otherwise you end up in a false reality. Thirty people view your work, 20 hate it and leave nothing, 10 say it’s amazing. So you get it published, hmmmm, probably a mistake.

Maybe you could have an ‘I’m not completely insecure’ filter on your portfolio, then people will know whether to be honest or not.

Actually, I’ve just stopped caring, I’m just adding to what will be a 100 comments with a probable 50/50 swing, proving nothing.

Ahh at last a bit of cold, hard reality ColdSoup-good to see. RR walked out of his pen this morning to find that his car window had been SMASHED IN OVERNIGHT BY SOME EVIL F*CKER AND RR IS NOW CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK TO ARRIVE SO…...BUGGER BEING NICE TO ANYONE!!!!!!!!
This is EXACTLY what false reality creates-people thinking anything is ok. C”MON PEOPLE THE BULL IS SNARLING….AND IF ANY OF YOU WERE IN ELWOOD LAST NIGHT WITH A CROW BAR…...

I understand where you are coming from ColdSoup – constructive criticism is fine and healthy. I don’t have a problem with that. But I’m getting the impression RR is not about constructive criticism (which can be done in a very positive and sensitive way – ie, by being “nice”). I’m sure all artists would welcome positive feedback, whether through compliments or helpful suggestions. But it’s all in the eye of the viewer – if you don’t like someone’s work, that’s fine, just don’t comment. However, if you feel someone’s work might be more effective with the inclusion or deletion of certain elements, I’m sure those comments might be welcomed and considered. Anyway, whatever words one uses is really irrelevant. I can’t see why so-called “nicey-nicey” words are so offensive to some people. We are all learning, and a little bit of positiveness goes an awfully long way, whereas a bit of negative feedback can destroy. I think we should be about encouraging other artists to keep working.

When I say I’m getting the impression that RR is more about nastiness than positiveness, why have a dig at people who type in all caps. Does RR know that person/those people? I know one of them. There are others who have criticized all caps too – and I must say I am really surprised by one in particular as I always thought that person to be much more sensitive about people’s differences.

Funnily enough I was in Elwood last night, and indeed with a crowbar, however I was meant to be in Guatamala sorting out some usurpers. Got my mushrooms confused you see. Don’t think I broke anyone’s window, and if I had it wouldn’t have been a car belonging to a bull, that would be a mistake. No, I remember chasing some purple squirrels and having my stomach pumped though.

In regards to the debate, I agree with which ever opinion seems to be the most popular in the end.

I’m going to go and have a drink because I’ve got a bastard behind the eyes.

Whirligig, I’ve reread RR and don’t think it’s having a go at people who type in caps. I think it’s having a joke and showing it’s anger, through caps. But that is clearly a sensitive issue for you.

I also don’t think it is saying we should all go and be unnecessarily nasty, but then I try not to think too much at all.

  • Elaine van Dyk

    Elaine van Dyk

Point taken ColdSoup. However the all caps issue in itself is not a particularly sensitive issue for me – it’s simply an extension of examples where people sometimes criticize others without knowing what lies behind the scenes. In fact, the person I know who sometimes uses all caps, doesn’t care two hoots what people think, and continues to make as thoughtful comments on work as possible.

  • ColdSoup

    ColdSoup

If they don’t care two hoots then all is well.

  • Elaine van Dyk

RR, I don’t think there is anything in the RedBubble rules to say people can’t make constructive, honest criticism, so why this big issue anyway? Those who want to make intelligent and well thought out criticisms have never been prevented from doing so.

That’s what I mean. Using RR as a platform for your own promotion.
Hold on a minute. YOU’RE USING RR AS A PLATFORM FOR YOUR OWN PROMOTION! Melinda Kerr would be horrified. She’s so sickeningly nice…..blah…ou know she still hasn’t sold anything? Who can believe that? I mean her work is so, so good. Especially as cards or prints. About to featured in magazines you know…Still she wouldn’t stoop to self promotion in this forum like you have Mr Reading… no indeed no…

There are some photos that are so jaw-droppingly fantastic that only a ” Wow!” will do. But in the main, I know that I overuse the word “nice” and I’m truly, truly sorry, it’s lazy English and I’ll never do it again. Promise.

What gets my goat – sorry, bull – is when people come out with the stock (beef stock) phrases like “Great shot”. OK, thanks for the comment – I’ll never turn down encouragement and support, but could you not be a bit more specific? Why is it a great shot? Is it the composition? The subject? How does it make you feel?

Let’s get decent, constructive positive comments going first, then we can start being nasty to each other.

Just as an aside, I always welcome constructive critique on my work

  • RedRag

    RedRag

Ahhhhhh the use of the pun. Nice work Durotriges. Hey, haven’t I seen you on an African savannah somewhere??

  • RedRag

    RedRag

And yes Mr Sjem you did push ‘nice’ out of the way to provide some honesty with Mr Reading. Although he did play a fairly straight bat back I must say. But then…he is after all, him.

  • rufflesal

    rufflesal

It’s called taking the “bull by the horns” or in your case – love handles. Nicely said RR – ummm why do I say nicely? uuhh…because it reminds me of those sugary biscuits from Arnotts.

(jeez! do I need a fricken reason for doing everything now?) uh oh did I type that out loud?

    Hey RR …

I say thanks because my mum taught me that it’s good manners when someone pays you a compliment.

Sometimes there have been so many comments posted before me that have praised the images colours, tones, composition, originality, capture, or sentiment – that all that is left for me to say is a wow .. or a brilliant … or some other single word comment.

I will critique in the critique forum, and never ever say anyone’s work is crap even if I hate it – because the fact that it is not to my taste does not make it crap.

There’s enough shit being thrown at us in the real world – I’d love to see RB remain the inspiring, nurturing place it was in the beginning …..
